The MPs Delyan Peevski, Mustafa Karadaya and Yordan Tsonev proposed reducing the VAT on baby foods and pharmaceutical products, including diapers, for up to 3-years-old children to 9%.
In their motives they mention the emergency measures forced by COVID-19, which also cause economic consequences.
“The unemployment rate is rising and even more households are facing financial difficulties, we propose that families with small children are being helped. Our proposition will reduce the prices of baby products. We owe this to our society – to give these families fair chance to raise their children no matter the current situation. This measure will also affect the demographics”, continue the movers of the proposal. In their opinion more families will be able to afford baby foods and pharmaceutical products if their proposal is added to the VAT Act.
The MPs have prepared impact assessment, which mentions a great number of Bulgarian families are concerned. Adopting the amendments will not cost anything to the budget and will not require additional administrative changes. “The national budget will lose around BGN 40 million after the amendments are adopted”, continue the movers.
Yordan Tsonev announced in a briefing on Tuesday that their idea for 9% VAT for baby products should not be in force for a particular period. He added that the MRF will vote in favor of lowering the VAT on restaurants as they were most affected by the pandemic of COVID-19. The political party also supports reducing the VAT for books.
“The idea for a lower VAT on books was announced a year ago by the MP Delyan Peevski and we are glad that the Prime Minister admitted now is the time to do this”, continued Tsonev.
The deputy head of the parliamentary group of GERB – Daniela Daritkova – confirmed that 9% VAT for books will be proposed until Friday, together with their idea for a lower VAT for restaurants.
