The Prosecutor’s office was a subject to unprecedented pressure by the Bulgarian president and his retinue of politicians, said Ivan Geshev.
"Prosecutors are proud to work for the Bulgarian nation instead of the oligarchs”, added Geshev. In his whole speech he mentioned the president only as “Radev” and stressed that he did that intentionally – to show the president as a leader of a political party. Geshev also pointed out that “Radev talks about light, but unites with darkness; he insists on dependable Prosecutor’s offices that closes its eyes for the plunders”.
The Prosecutor General added that his colleagues work based on evidences. It’s not of their business whether Uzunov has access to unsigned rulings of the Supreme Administrative Court before they have been published; or whether he assists foreign citizen to erase their past criminal registrations. 5 cartons with documents have been found during a rummage of the home of a former head of Archives Department of the Ministry of Interior yesterday, including the markings "Top Secret".”Radev has to announce to the nation whether he knew of those crimes or not”, continued Geshev. He reminded that the president is the only person immune from justice. “Therefore, we will wait for and respect the decision of the Constitutional Court on our request about his immunity”, added Geshev.
"No one is immune from justice for the Prosecutor’s office – neither a politician, nor an oligarch. Nothing like that has happened since 1989. Honest people should not feel threatened from our actions”, continued the Prosecutor General.
He continued: "It is quite intolerable for a president to call the Prosecutor’s Office – “mafia”. This derogates from the reputation of the institution and the state and is a drastic interference in the sovereign judiciary”.
“As long as I am Prosecutor General, the Bulgarian Prosecutor’s Office will remain determined to achieve this goal of fairness through justice. I will inform EU for this unprecedented political pressure as an attempt of the president to destroy the Prosecutor’s Office. I am proud of my professional position. It is an honor for me!”, continued Geshev.
