"It was a whole-day-marathon of riots. The demonstrations started in the morning but there were many provocateurs that increased the tension among the protesters. We were supposed to stand still and watch some of our colleagues fall to the ground right by our side”, said Anton Zlatanov, deputy head of Sofia police.
"They tried to set fire to pales of hay under our legs. They were throwing small bombs and fireworks at us. Meanwhile our main goal was to spare their life and health by putting ours at risk.
At least 100 policemen were wounded until midday. 15 of them were transported to hospitals”, he added.
A firework exploded in a police car after the window was broken. 60 people were detained during the night demonstration.
"Politicians or public figures should not appeal for riots or clashes between protesters and policemen. Many of my colleagues are wounded. Our actions were driven by a tactic sparing the lives of both policemen and protesters.
There were many improvised explosive devices in the tents of the protesters – fireworks, hammers, metal batons and bats, announced the police”, continued Anton Zlatanov.
"Improvised explosive devices are the most dangerous “weapon” of the protesters up to now. They went beyond all bounds”, said the deputy head of Sofia police.
