„You have our support! Regular parliamentary elections are the only way for every citizen to express his opinion”, said the EPP President Donald Tusk to the leader of GERB and Prime Minister of Bulgaria Boyko Borissov. They met in Brussels on the start of the second day of the European Council. Borissov and Tusk agreed that the Bulgarian government has made important strides for both the country and the European integration of the Western Balkans and that such government policy can guarantee Bulgaria's sustainable development.
According to EPP President Donald Tusk, it is the systemic parties like GERB that have the necessary capacity, experience and intelligence to lead their countries through the crisis. Tusk also congratulated Borissov on GERB's victory in the partial local elections.
They also discussed the package of measures to address the effects of COVID-19 on the economies and societies of EU member states. Tusk and Borissov also highlighted the EPP's great contribution to the so called “rescue plan”. "That is why the EPP family is the largest and strongest in the Union", they both agreed.
Borissov and Tusk also talked about the first report of the European Commission on the rule of law throughout the European Union. The Bulgarian Prime Minister pointed out that the assessment is objective and reflects the country's efforts to fight corruption. Boyko Borissov stressed that Bulgaria will implement all the recommendations of the Venice Commission and the EC for reforms in the judiciary.
